NI PCIe-8233 - Can spare ports be used for general purpose networking?

Hello!

I have an application that calls for the use of a NI PCIe-8233. I only need 3 ports for cameras and was thinking about using the remaining port to interface with an Ethernet light controller, which communicates over standard TCP/IP.

Can this be done? Do the ports appear as standard network adapter in Windows?

Hi Andrei,

Yes, you should be able to use that last port to interface with another Ethernet device that also follows the normal Ethernet or GigE standards. Ports do show up in Device Manager as standard network adapters. 

Essentially this PCIe card is just a NIC card, so you can treat it like you do other NICs on your computer. The only difference here is that you have an NI driver that gives you connectivity from your camera to an ADE like LabVIEW/ LabWindows/ Visual Studio.
