PBA LED testing using machine vision

Hello, I am currently looking into the possible use of labview machine vision to test the proper function of LED:s on PBA:s.

The goal is to create a production test (of new PBA:s) using a camera in fixed mounting taking pictures of the LED:s (around 20-40 different LED:s).

There would be several pictures taken since there is a sequence in the LED testing. LED:s on/of, switch color of multi colored LED:s and probably a couple of other steps.

My questions to the Forum is:

1 Does any one out there have any experience something similar to the described scenario above?

2 Any comments of the feasibility of such a system?

Hello Ansa,

My name its Tom Murphy and I work for a company called Feasa (www.feasa.ie). We have a lot of experience measuring the functionality of LEDs on PCBs. We offer a product called the Feasa LED Analyser which has up to 20 independent measurement channels. The system comprises a measurement unit, 20 fiber optic cables and 20 optical heads which are placed over the LEDs to be tested. The LED Analyser can measure the RGB, HSI, dominant wavelength, xy chromaticity, CCT and Intensity value of an LED.

We offer Labview VI's, a dll and sample source code in C#, VB and other programming languages to simplify the integration into any test system.

Please visit our web site for additional information.

Best Regards

Tom Murphy

Do you have a link to the feasa LabVIEW software?  I don't see it anywhere on the website.  I've done an internet search but so far I see no LabVIEW examples anywhere.

Hi Ansa,

if you don't need special tests (i.e. led light wavelength measurements, CCT, etc) you can use also a simple color camera system. We did some application in production using simple USB and GigE color camera and NI Vision Builder to acquire an inspection area, find out all expected light spots and check the color. I think you can use Labview and integrate VBAI module.
