Error code 200329 “DAQmxErrorPrimingCfgFIFO”, 200546 “DAQmxErrorExtCalAdjustExtRefVoltageFailed” and multiple 1600s

Recently I performed a lot of research in an attempt to discover why I received an error when I was attempting to calibrate some devices using Calibration Executive 3.2.  The error was as follows:

Error -200329 occurred at DAQmx Self Calibrate.vi:1

An error has occurred while attempting to configure the device for analog input acquisition.  If an external master time base is being used make sure the source is connected and generating an appropriate clock.  Otherwise, contact National Instruments Technical Support.

The error code is also listed as DAQmxErrorPrimingCfgFIFO,

Another error code was 200546 “DAQmxErrorExtCalAdjustExtRefVoltageFailed”

Besides not having an external clock when the device is expecting one, not having the most recent version of the DAQmx driver was a possibility for the error.  DAQmx, Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX), and Calibration Executive software was compared and there were no problems with them.  Occasionally, the problem is a hardware issue.  To check this, DAQ diagnostic utility, could be used or alternatively right  click on the device and open a test panel in MAX, that will automatically run a self test and give a direct line to what the hardware, is doing.  This was done and there were no problems, the test was a pass.  If the test fails, there is a normally hardware problem and the next step would be to contact NI directly by going to www.ni.com/contact to initiate a repair; but since it was a pass this was not done.  It was thought once again there must be a software problem because swapping out multiple modules still yielded the same error.  However it WAS a hardware problem, swapping out the CHASSIS resolved the problem.  The problem was a blown fuse in the back plane of the SCXI-1000 chassis.  The fuse is located behind the fan.  In addition to the power entry module fuse, the analog supply lines on the backplane are fused at 1.5 A on the SCXI-1000 chassis. The fuses are there to protect the power supply from shorts on modules.  They do not look like a normal fuse, they look like a resistor or capacitor and they are F1.5A 125V (LittleFuse R251 01.5 TI) fuses.  Even if the units powers up and appears to work it may not due to the fact that these fuses are on the positive and negative supply line for the signal.  Thus the error will only occur when an analog signal is used (read/write).  I hope the above helps someone.

Now my question, why did the fuse blow?  At one point three SCXI-1600 modules was inserted into the SCXI-1000 at the same time.  Is this bad?  Can one actually insert multiple SCXI-1600 into the same chassis and do a calibration on them? As of yet I have not found any literature on NI’s site which states NOT to insert more than one SCXI-1600 into a single chassis.
