Measuring a voltage signal with the NI-9213 DAQ

I'm building a system that will use thermocouples to measure the interior temperature of a mold and an infrared pyrometer to measure the surface temperature of my molten cast metal. I would like to be able to purchase a pyrometer which outputs an analog voltage signal that I could then collect with the same DAQ that is collecting my thermocouple readings. Could the NI-9213 and Signal Express complete this task?

I do realize the voltage range on the NI-9213 is quite small as most thermocouples don't produce much emf, I'm mostly just concerned if I can collect a voltage with or without CJC applied to it while collecting thermocouple data.

Hello iaSt8Solid,

You can measure voltage with your 9213, but it must stay within the range of -78.125 mV - 78.125 mV.

To implement it in SignalExpress, you must make an analog input step and include both voltage and temperature in that step. If you create two different steps, you will get a resource conflict error.

CJC is a separate signal, so it will only affect your thermocouple measurement and will not be implemented with your voltage measurement.

I want to measure output of heat flux sensor( which has got full scale output of 50 mV) using NI9213.

Please inform if I can measure it using NI9213.

Is there any application note/tutorial on how to do it. How to avoid CJC?

Hi JainS,

The 9213 is meant to only be used with thermocouples. It is recommended that you use a voltage measurement module such as the NI 9205. Using the 9213 would not be impossible however since it is not made for such use, depending on how you apply the voltages could effect what values the module reads. Also. since this is not intended use for the device I am not aware of any notes or tutorials on doing this.

Best,
