Which compactDAQ module for optical encoder

Solved!
Go to solution

If I have an optical encoder with a resolution of half a degree and plan on using it for either rotational velocity or position, can someone reccomend a CompactDAQ/CompactRIO module?  Would labview be fast enough to to keep up if lets say your device is rotating at 50 rpm?

Hi NSL22,

Is it a quadrature encoder that outputs TTL voltage levels?

If so, I suggest either a 9401 or 9402.

50 rpm should not present any problems (half of a degree resolution would result in a 600 Hz signal, these boards can take in up to 10 MHz).

Do you just need to display the position of the encoder?  Compact DAQ has on-board counters that will handle most of the work so the software shouldn't have to do much.  If using Compact RIO you would program this yourself on the FPGA.  If you're looking to provide feedback based on the position of the encoder, Compact RIO would likely be the best option.  If not, Compact DAQ should be more than adequate depending on what exactly you need to do.
