External live usb booting with PXIe 8135 Controller

Hello all,

In our lab we have a PXIe 8135 controller with LabVIEW Real-Time 15.0.1 currently on it that we use to run our experiment.

We are considering the idea of migrating to a different control system and for this purpose we would need Linux on the controller, so we were thinking of booting the controller from an external hard drive with Linux installed on it, in order to make the procedure not invasive and carry on with the old method in case things don't work out.

Would you suggest to boot the controller from an external hard drive, maybe trying a live distro, modifying all the BIOS settings?
