speed measurement of induction motor using crio

I am working on a speed monitoring system of induction motor using NI cRIO.I have a rotary encoder but dont know how to make the hardware connection and which c-series module to use.Also I am confused whether the direct connection can be made.Can i use an IR sensor in place of the encoder?please help i need to complete this project....its urgent!!

What encoder are you using and what C series moduels do you have?

i am using E50S8-400-3-T-24 autonics encoder.I have NI 9421 module.Also tell me how to measure the speed(rpm).

Try using this example, just add in the z line if you want, and replace the FPGA I/O nodes for ni 9421.
