Changing Color of String Control while Enter Text

We are making a custom string control with a gradient frame and a transparent text (much like the military String.ctl). Everything works almost as expected but I could not find a way to change the background color of the text while it is in "edit mode", that is, text can be entered. For example the mentioned String.ctl shows a solid black box in edit mode and a transparent background in display mode.

Unfornutaly I cannot open you link (Access denied oder "Sie sind nicht berechtigt" in German)

Please find attached an example: The string control has a image as background. The text component is transparent so that the frame background shines through. But as soon as the user enters a text, a blank white rectangle is displayed. I want to change the color similar to the real background.
