I can select an avatar from an uploaded image but nowhere a button for upload, so I try this

Once you post it to one of your albumns there si an option to make it your avatar.

ther used to be an avatars or Icons thread (I suppose it is still around) reserved for just this issue. the forum usually just ignores the thread (and unchecks subscriptions to it, Like I just did for this)
