NI-DAQmx 8.5 and Parallels

The Fourth Quarter 2007 Instrumentation Newsletter has an article on the back cover about "Developing Data Acquisition Systems on the Mac with Virtualization Technology. Quoting now from the article "... NI R&D engineers have performed initial product testing on these "virtual machines," and they have seen nearly full functionality with the following NI products." One of the products listed is DAQmx 8.5. I'm trying to understand what they mean about DAQmx 8.5 functionality. I have a MacBook Pro set up with Parallels and Bootcamp. If I boot into Bootcamp, my data acquisition system based on an NI ExpressCard-8360 and a PXI-1002 chassis loaded with a NI PXI-6534 works great. If I crank up Parallels, with LabView 8.2 and DAQmx 8.5, MAX shows only an PXI System (Unidentified) with no devices listed.

So my question is, exactly what does "nearly full functionality with DAQmx 8.5" really mean?

P.S. I'm running 10.5.1 and when I plug in the ExpressCard-8360 that is connected to the PXI-1002 chassis (with power on), I get a "card symbol" in the menu bar indicating that the system at least recognizes a card from an Unknown Vendor and an Unknown Card Type.

Thanks, Phil

Hi Phil,

We use the statement "nearly full functionality" because it is still in the Beta stage.  We have seen potential, but are still testing everything.

As of yet, PCI based traffic cannot be virtualized through systems such as Parallels and VMWare Fusion.  You cannot communicate with the ExpressCard system because it is an extension of the PCI-bus.  Bootcamp works because you are actually booting into the Windows Operating System, so you do not run into the issues of virtualization.  The issue here is not with DAQmx functionality, but rather the communication protocol.

For now, I hope that running through Bootcamp is a possible solution for you.
