PXI-7831 card not getting detected in LabVIEW 2018.

Solved!
Go to solution

We are using a NI 7831 card and using LabVIEW version 2018.

We have downloaded all compatible version drivers.

NI real time 2018

NI FPGA 2018

NI R Series Multifunction RIO 2018.

But it is not getting detected when I checked the NI max it shows NI RIO version 20 there which should be 18.

Please suggest ways to solve this.

RIO 20 should have support for LabVIEW 2018 so, one of two things might have happened.

  • RIO 20 dropped support for the 7831. You can read the release notes to find out.  The file is ironically named "ReadMe.txt."  if that is the case RIO 20 needs to be uninsalled and an older driver must be installed. Again, Read the release notes to select the latest version that supports that hardware.
  • The RIO driver was installed BEFORE the LabVIEW IDE and the FPGA Addon.  A simple reinstall of the driver would fix that.

  • Actually we tried doing that but NI RIO does not show in package manager so we deleted the folder. But that also did not work.
  • Then I got this Software Support for CompactRIO, CompactDAQ, Single-Board RIO, R Series, and EtherCAT - NI
  • Where we got to know that the latest software compatible is 2016.
  • So we are now installing the 2016 and all compatible version of drivers in accordance to 2016.
  • But we have one more system in which 2018 was installed along with all other drivers needed which is of the version 18. It works fine and detects the hardware PXI-7831R what is the possible reason????

Most likely it had at some point LabVIEW 2016 or earlier installed and the according RIO drivers, then got upgraded to LabVIEW 2018 without updating the RIO drivers.

This is an unsupported combination and could lead to nasty problems but in that case went well. However there is no way to install RIO 16 in a newer LabVIEW version, the installer simply didn’t know where LabVIEW 2018 would be installed and NI never felt like letting users do such untested and unsupported experiments.

It worked when we downloaded LabVIEW 2016 and all drivers according to LabVIEW 2016. We got the accurate information from NI website.
