trouble with datasockets with windows firewall, XP svc pack 2, and LV 7.1

I'm having trouble.  Ever since one of our machines was (automatically) updated (while on the company network), Datasockets aren't working.  The DataSocket Server silently fails to start.  I've gone into the Windows Firewall settings (I'm a local admin on this machine) and added the programs I saw in one of the help forums/knowledge base, but it doesn't fix anything.  I've disabled the WIndows Firewall, and the DataSocket Server still doesn't start up.

Thanks,

Hi Scrapheap,

You say that Datasocket Server silently fails to start... does this mean that the application window doesn't even open up (From the start menu, National Instruments»Datasocket»Datasocket Server ?

cwdss.exe is the actual process that this runs under - can you open up the task manager and see if this is running, even though you cannot see it? You may want to try ending the process and relaunching it.

Also, are you able to launch the Datasocket Server Manager (in the same directory on the start menu) ? This one's process name is cwdssmgr.exe

H'lo Sam,

The application window doesn't even show up.

cwdss doesn't show up in the Task Manager, BUT the Datasocket Server Manager can start.

I have our IT set to work on it, but they couldn't do anything remotely -- the guy's on his way over.

I went to re-install NIDaQ, but it says that the Windows Installer Service isn't found (or is not responding).  😕

IT is now working on that, too.

Thanks,

Hi Scrapheap,

It's difficult for me to say whether this is an issue with Windows or with LabVIEW, but a reinstallation or a repair of LabVIEW may be in order.

Let me know what your IT dept finds.

Sam,

Our IT has been looking at it.  One thing we've found out is that the Windows Installer is broken.  Not only can't we re-install libraries/drivers from a CD, we can't un-install LV.  I wouldn't be surprised if we end up doing a clean re-install of Windows.

IT is puzzled, but it's probably more in their court now.

(you can call me Bob. "scrapheap" was unfortunately chosen now, I see.  It was chosen on a spur of the moment.)

Thanks for all your help.  I'll keep this thread posted of the final disposition of the situation.
