NI-USB 6008 detected when one not present

Ever since upgrading my system to the latest NI Professional Development System update (August 2006), every time I log in to Windows DAQmx detects an NI-USB 6008 (that is not present) and gives me a blank list of actions to choose from.  I do not have nor have I ever used an NI-USB 6008 or any similiar device on this particular system.   I've installed the same update on 4 other systems including my laptop and did not experience this problem.

The only thing that is different about this system is that I have a USB printer atttached that I suspect it may be detecting (I'll try diconnecting it to see...).  The printer still works fine despite the error.

Commandr,

That's an unusual behavior you're experiencing.  I'm curious to know what devices the Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX) shows.  If you open MAX and check under devices and interfaces, is a 6008 listed?  If it is listed, try deleting it and see if your computer continues to detect it.

I would be doubtful that a printer is being mistook for a DAQ card, but I'd be curious to know what you find out.  Be sure and post what you discover, and if it is the printer, what kind of printer is it?

Good luck!

I disconnected the printer and rebooted my machine.  It is still detecting an NI-USB-6008 after I log on to windows.  Nothing appears listed in MAX.

Other information that may be of use:
- I have no DAQ cards, serial, or parallel devices atached to my system.
- I have a Keyboard, Mouse, and 2 Monitors all connected to USB ports. (All are Dell brand.)

Hi Commandr-

It sounds like you may be experiencing a corruption in the Data files that MAX and NI-DAQmx use to store configuration information.  To verify this you should boot your computer into Safe Mode and backup the /Program Files/National Instruments/MAX/Data directory.  Then delete the directory and boot your computer normally.  The /Data folder should be regenerated and any residual device listings should disappear.

Please let us know if this does not correct the problem.  Thanks-

I deleted the data directory as you described and rebooted but it still says it detects an NI-USB-6008.  Still nothing shows up in MAX.

Have you tried deleting the device from your device manager?  If Windows announces the detection of hardware it should be listed there.  Provided that this is the case, find it and delete it.  Then click actions at the top and tell your computer to scan for new hardware.  Hopefully that'll fix it and it won't show up.  Let us know!

I don't believe Windows is detecting this particular device.  I checked Device Manager and nothing is listed.

What I get each time I reboot is a dialog titled "New Data Aquisition Device" that says "NI-DAQmx has detected a new data acquisition device." and lists it as "NI-USB 6008". Then it says "What would you like to do?" and gives me a blank list of options.

There is a checkbox which says "Always take this Action."  I've tried checking the checkbox and hitting OK but the dialog still reappears on reboot.

Commandr,

Try disabling the NI Device Monitor.  Right click on the system tray NI Eagle icon and disable the "Run at Startup" option.  Restart and see if that helps.
