Smaller (and cheaper) sbRIO based on Xilinx Zynq

Status: New

A smaller (and cheaper) sbRIO based on the Xilinx Zynq chip. Target size is SO-DIMM form factor (68 x 30 mm (half the area of a credit card), 200 pins). Such a board  would be OEM friendly and can be plugged into a product (rather than the current sbRIO offerings that requires the product to be developed around the sbRIO rather than the sbRIO fitting into your product). Also, a Base Board that is (only) used during development. Below is what the proposed sbRIO and Base Board would roughly look like (courtesy of Enclustra FPGA Solutions)

With the announcement today of the crio-9068, we are now very close to realising this idea. The crio-9068 uses a Xynq chip, so most of the technical work has now been done. The crio-9068 is a large form factor full-blown cRIO, so it would only be suitable for very low volumes (or prototyping). A sbRIO would be another step closer, but again, not the best solution if you want to deploy more than a few dozen units.

 

If NI wants this idea to happen, it would not take much effort from here. I look forward to this exciting possibility. It would revolutionise the name of National Instruments and LabVIEW. This is sorely needed after a 23.6% decline in the National Instruments share price relative to the market (Nasdaq) since the beginning of last year (1.6 years ago). This idea, if implemented, would have a hugely positive impact for National Instruments and its customers. Come on, go for it, you'll never regret it.

 

This will reignite my career!

NI = DIGILENT, So, Why we dont use Digilent Zybo board ? It is nearly the same board with myRIO!

 

BTW, I have an thesis, but still couldnt find any board that I can program with Labview...

Every boards has lots of Mhz, DI I/Os, A I/Os, but I dont need all of them, I just need maximum 100 Mhz clock and as simple as possible board, that it can run my code autonomously!

Can any body advice me ?

How great would it be if we could target other hardware boards with LabVIEW embedded? This parallella board costs $99 and has a Xilinx Zynq with a 16 core co-processor. NI really needs more/better hardware options, or have the tools to allow developers to target other hardware. It is sad that as a full-time LabVIEW developer I have to use C/C++ with my home hobby projects.

HOORAY !!!    NI have just announced they plan to release this product !!

 

They are also releasing a dev board.  Due for release Dec 2014.  How prophetic was this TWO year old idea.
