Editable Label for custom VI

Being able to edit the label of newly created VI when called on another VI on the Block Diagram, similar to what is possible with standard VIs (below image).

I think it would be too confusing if the label would not match the VI name.

Some alternative ideas along these lines:

  • Show the text of the "window title" (as configured in "VI properties...window appearance") instead of the file name.
  • Allow a caption in addition to the label. While the label shows the file name of the subVI, the caption would be local to the instance and can contain free text.

Just some ideas... 😉

how do you "Allow a caption" to a subVI??

Speaking for the LVOOP users, I think this would be especially confusing if the node was a dynamic dispatch subVI call since there you need the name to recognize what VIs could be invoked.

Having said that, I can understand some annoyance from users who are using a library of VIs written in another human language -- all the VI names are in the author's original language, and while the titles may be localized in the palettes and the context help, they're not localized on the diagram. Perhaps we could do something like is done in the Context Help, where both the VI name and the VI Title are displayed simultaneously. That raises issues of the VI title being changed dynamically at runtime, but I bet that can be worked out. But it would mean more space on the diagram.

Not sure what the answer is here, but I'll kudos the idea on the grounds that I think something in this area could be done to improve usability.

Wait a moment... you CAN edit the label! You just can't edit it directly by doubleclicking, but if you rightclick the subVI icon and select Properties, you can change it there. I just did it (Labview 9).

So this is probably not an idea, but just a little bug to be fixed.
