Opening a VI by default shows the front panel and not the block diagram. Most of the time, I want to go straight to the block diagram from the project explorer window and ignore the front panel. This has already been suggested, of a sort, here (and deserves more kudos! )
As has been pointed out many times, a large project will easily have a dozen (or more! ) VIs open at a time, with 2 windows per VI, and quickly getting to the one I want takes a bit more effort than a quick Ctrl-Tab or Alt-Tab or hovering my mouse over the windows for an aero thumbnail.
My suggestion is like the Ctrl-E to show/hide the block diagram;
- Make a shortcut to show/hide the usually unwanted front panel
- Have a switch in Tools -> Options to automatically show block diagram and/or hide front panel
