Let the description wrap

Status: Declined

Not an idea post

The description of a control does does not wrap.  The context help window tries to accommodate to the description but there is an upper limit of its width; if the lines of the description do not fit, the context help window displays a horizontal scroll bar, which makes the description hard to read.

Wraps just fine here (LabVIEW 2012 and 2013). What LabVIEW version are you using? How long are your lines? Can you show a picture of a non-wrapping context help window?

(There are some oddities if you make the context help window very narrow, but that's not a normal scenario.)

The description does not wrap

LabVIEW 13.0f1 (64-bit).  Note how the window title is misplaced too.

This does not happen when you hover over the icon of an opened typedef.  However, LabVIEW ignores the description of the typedef itself and of everything inside the typedef; hovering over a control of that type does not display any description unless the description is also set for the specific instance of the typedef.  I understand that this is documented and by design; however, if a typedef means anything, every control using this typedef should have a description corresponding to its meaning, and all descriptions should change if the developer updates the initial description.  This is hard to achieve under the present setting.

It looks to me like something is wrong with your Windows settings.  First, it looks like the old Win2000 scheme.  (Which seems odd since if you are using 64-bit LabVIEW, you should be using it on a 64-bit operating system which would probably be Vista or later).  What OS are you using?

Second, that X close out button looks way too small (as well as the title bar) while the font of the window title looks okay.

I think you might have a bad combination of windows settings for font sizes.  You should try to replicate this on a different machine.  Even play with the windows themes and try to reset it to a default theme.

It is Microsoft Windows 7, with the classic desktop layout.

I think you need to post this in one of the usual forum threads as a bug for the AEs to investigate. Word wrapping works fine on all the context help windows that I've seen. Something seems to have gone wrong for yours alone. Are you seeing this on all Context Help entries or just specific VIs/controls?

I do not know what the usual forum threads are.  LabVIEW context help does not wrap the description for all controls if it contains multiple paragraphs.

AristosQueue means LabVIEW forum.

What you have isn't really a new idea, it is more of a bug report.  But it is a bug that apparently only you have and no one else can replicate.  It seems directly related to your Windows settings.
