Auto Connect VI to wire

Status: New

This may have similarities to Pelle S - Quick Wiring, but wouldn't it be nice if you could drop a VI on to a wire such as the Error In - Error Out wire on a diagram and it auto connect to the VI's Error In and Error Out connectors.

Today you can right click on an error wire (or any wire) and select Insert and the VI you then select will be inserted on that wire (and LV has some algorithm to try to match it to the terminals in the new VI). Isn't that basically the same thing?

Not really. When you drop a control/indicator on the board and bring in close to another terminal such as on a VI, it will automatical wire. There is no right mouse click... do something.

I think I would only like this if a modifier key was needed, and if the user could set the "auto-connect distance" (in pixels) somewhere in the settings.

Otherwise, I feel that I would be undoing this more often than I'd actually be using it.

While I generally like this idea, given the rather poor performance of Clean Up Diagram on wires, I suspect that dthor might be right - We would spend more time undoing than it would save.

If this is implemented, it should only connect wires with compatible data types and wire/terminal spacings.  Error wires as shown in Ray's suggestion, of course, and paths/refnums on the upper corners.  If it would break a wire or force a coercion dot, do not connect.

It should also work on things like Invoke Nodes.

Here is an alternative somebody made with QuickDrop: Quick Drop to Insert selected node between wires

Thanks crossrulz, I ended up with Hooovahh´s QuickDrop Plugin to insert stuff from clipboard into a wire:

How about add to the original idea the need for a key like "W" just like we do when we move connected things across a structure wall?
