Switch To Previous Case In a Case Structure

Status: Declined

Any idea that has not received any kudos within a year after posting will be automatically declined.

Hi All,

I felt that it would be good to have an option to switch to a previous case in a case structure with numerous cases when going through the cases for debugging or understanding a code. It often happens that I have to scroll through the list of cases to get to a case and then may be I'll have to check something in the top most case. Again if I have to check the previous case, I have to again scroll all the way down to the case, which becomes a little tedious. Instead, it would have been good if we had some kind of option to switch to the previous cases sequentially (in a right click menu of the case structure or some keyboard shortcut after selecting the case structure). Something similar to the "Previous Sequence" and "Next Sequence" options we have in TestStand.

I'm sorry if someone has already posted this in the idea exchange forum. I tried to search it but couldn't find any such posts.

regards,
Nitz

You'll be happy to hear that this already exists for more than a decade, even if it is somewhat hidden - place the cursor somewhere inside the case (or any other multi-frame structure) and hold down Ctrl while using the mouse wheel to scroll back and forth through the frames.

The CaseSelect Quick Drop plugin has navigation arrows.  They don't work perfectly, but they're fine for back-and-forth navigation.

I never fixed them because nobody ever said they used the feature.  Perhaps you wouldn't need, either, them if the other features of the plugin meet your needs?

And what about using the left and right triangles that are next to the title of the case?

I think the OP is talking about going to the last visited case, not the next case.  i.e. If I'm watching TV and I'm interested in a sports programm but also in a film most televisions have the option to toggle between the two, regardless of where the channels are in the channel list.

It's like setting a bookmark in the case list and flipping back and forth.  I think it's a good idea.

If that is the situation, then the idea needs to be edited to clarify this, because "previous" and "next" is already defined by the order that the items are listed in case structure.  I'm not even sure you could get this idea to work.  If you are using scrolling to go through the cases like he said, the "previous case visited" will be the previous case in the order of the case structure.

Hi guys,

I'm extremely sorry for having less clarity in the post. As Intaris mentioned, my idea was to have an option to switch back to the last visited case out of the numerous cases in a case case structure.

I'm not sure how to edit this post. Can anyone help me editing this post?

This old idea seems like it would do the job: http://forums.ni.com/t5/LabVIEW-Idea-Exchange/quot-Back-quot-Button-for-Block-Diagram-Navigation/idi... ...and it could do with a few more kudos! 😃
